A
long time ago, an alien race called the Forerunners repelled an alien called the Flood which had taken over most sentient life, in the the Milky Way Galaxy. The Forerunners developed a weapon to put a halt to the Flood. Using the Ark, they built a huge array of Halos, that would destroy all sentient life in the galaxy thereby starving the parasites. Buying as much time as possible, the Forerunners eventually were forced to activate the rings before they took off and escaped.
Now fast forward tens of thousands of years into the future to a scenario in which humanity is in its 26th century and run by the United Nations Space Command when in 2525 a colony is attacked and a holy war breaks out with aliens called the Covenants.
