Top Windows 8 Devices  2012-2013

New Operating System | New computer

With the latest Microsoft Windows Operating System, computer manufacturers are releasing lots of new computers, laptops and tablets to take advantage of the new features that are being launched. Touch screen computers and devices will love the Windows 8 User Interface formerly known as "Metro", users will love the ease of dealing with non-responsive programs in the revamped Task Manager.

We look here at the the new Windows 8 pre-built computers. Of course, you may choose tobuild your own computer.

Windows 8 Desktops
Whether you are looking for an All-in-One desktop computer like the VIZIO All-in-One Desktop or something more traditional, the launch of Microsoft Windows 8 is a great opportunity for you to buy a new computer.

Microsoft are launching their upgrade offer for all new desktop computers purchased before January 31, 2013 and this means that you can buy a new Windows 7 Desktop Computer now and upgrade to Windows 8 for only $14.99 (UK - 14.99, check for other countries) through the dedicated Microsoft Upgrade Website - These are some of the top Windows 7 products availabe on Amazon.com right now.

Samsung Series 7 DP700A3B-A02US 23-Inch All-in-One Desktop (Silver/Black)

This Samsung AIO Desktop Computer come with a USB3 connector for your future hi-speed USB needs, Windows 7 Home Premium and an Intel Core i5 processor.

The thing that I don't like about the Samsung Series 7 is the computer base is part of the computer, the DVD Drive is built into the base underneath the monitor, I know this is AIO, but the computer as the stand, it does not seem natural.

Acer AM3970-UR10P Desktop (Black)

Acer AM3970-UR10P Desktop (Black)

If you are looking for something to surf the Internet, watch online TV and generally do the office work then you don't usually need anything more powerful in a new PC than an Intel Core i3 CPU. This Acer is a tower only (so you need a monitor separately) but it is a generally all round good computer to put Windows 8 on.

Beware though, if you are going to connect a monitor by HDMI the port on the Acer AM3970 does not support sound! You will need to connect a separate sound cable.

Dell XPS XPSo27-2942BK 27-Inch All-in-One Desktop (Black)

Dell XPS XPSo27-2942BK 27-Inch All-in-One Desktop (Black)

Sporting a 3rd Generation Intel Core i5, the Dell is quite possibly one of the most flexible of the All-In-One Desktop PCs with an adjustable stand on both an arm and on the back of the monitor itself.

Dell are now pre-ordering an updated version of the XPS 27 but it is disappointing that they do not offer a SSD option to make it that one step better.

Windows 8 Laptops

One of the problems with the launch of Windows 8 is "How Do You Define a Laptop?". The launch of products like the ASUS Transformer TF101 meant that Tablets had dedicated keyboard docks to turn them into Laptops, just like some business laptops came with docks to help turn them into portable desktops.

Windows 8 has introduced more manufacturers prepared to take the plunge into the hybrid Tablet-Laptop market.
Sony VAIO T Series SVT13122CXS 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

Sony VAIO T Series SVT13122CXS 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver)

Now available for pre-order, this VAIO 13 inch ultrabook is going to come with a fresh install of Windows 8 (no fiddly $15 upgrades), a Core i3 CPU and 4GB RAM.

Being an Ultrabook you won't get any optical drives but you will be getting Sony's latest upgrade tot heir Windows 8 range.... a touch screen!

Don't scream too loudly yet though, early reviews suggest that the hinges on the Ultrabook are not strong enough to let you type or draw for any length of time on the touch screen. That will put some people off, especially graphics designers and anyone using the bundled ArtRage Studio software.

HP Pavilion g7-2240us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

HP Pavilion g7-2240us 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

The HP Pavilion range has always been one that has been solid in the budget to mid-market. This G7 is aiming to do the same and comes with a Core i3 processor, 750GB "traditional" hard drive and 6GB of RAM.

The problem with the HP range in the past has been that battery life was not the best.

Samsung Series 3 NP350V5C-T02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver)

Samsung Series 3 NP350V5C-T02US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Titan Silver)

Upping the processor to an Intel Core i5 is this Samsung Series 3. The 2.5GHz CPu and 6GB of RAM make up for the slightly under-par 500GB of hard drive; something that would only be a problem for a desktop replacement laptop.

Don't the the Intel HD Graphics inside fool you though; the 1366x768 only supports 720p, not full HD!

Windows 8 Tablets

Windows 8 and Tablet Computers are meant to go together. Tablet makers are flooding the pre-release of Windows 8 with products specially designed for either Windows 8 or the Windows RT operating systems.

While Amazon are busy getting their products loaded and pre-orders taken, lets have a quick rundown of the contenders.

The Dell XPS 10 is looking to take on the "Tablet-With-Keyboard" market, coming with a detachable keyboard and with a 10 inch screen could almost be considered as a netbook that comes apart. Dell have embargoed the specifications until nearer launch day, but suffice to say that users will be impressed with the rear mounted camera and 10 inch-screen, even if Windows RT and it's restrictive installation policy is a problem!
Acer Iconia W700-6465 11.6-Inch 128 GB Tablet (Silver)

Acer Iconia W700-6465 11.6-Inch 128 GB Tablet (Silver)

First up is from a company that make great everyday laptops and I use quite a few of those.

The Acer Iconia is going to be a true Windows 8 tablet instead of Windows RT. It's 1.7Ghz Core i5 processor and 4GB RAM means that this is going to pack a powerful punch and Acer claims that it will have a great 8 hour battery life.

As is increasingly normal in new tablets 10 point multi-touch screens are included (that's all ten fingers at once) and the front and rear facing HD Cameras can take photo's while you back them up to a hard drive using the USB3 port.

If you buy yours from Amazon it also comes with the docking cradle and a bluetooth keyboard. Shame they did not include a nice sturdy case, but then we can't have everything.

Microsoft Surface

Hardware From a Software Vendor?

With the release of Microsoft Windows 8 announced, the announcement was made that Microsoft were finally entering the tablet market with the Surface. This is actually a tablet, don't let the picture fool you; the keyboard that you see is an option for your inputs but it is not designed to be a hybrid device like the HP Envy X2.

The Surface will be available in two different levels. Currently available to pre-order from Microsoft is the Surface RT which is pre-installed with the Windows RT operating system and available in 32GB and 64GB versions. The case and keyboard are available as part of the package for an extra $100 or separately for $120. It won't take long for the third party vendors to come out with their own though! You will get an unconfirmed 1.5Mhz CPU which is believed to be an NVidia Tegra 3 T30, 2GB of RAM and a pair of 720p cameras front and rear.

A second version of the Surface is expected in Early 2013 and will carry Windows 8 Professional, an Intel CPU (one assumes Ivy Bridge?) and USB3 ports as well. Even less is known about the Windows 8 Version than the RT version of the Surface, so we must wait and see!
